A busy day in the Funchal hold....
Lots of holding and diversions due to the wind at Funchal.....but one guy seems determined to have a go - RZO160.

A tricky wind near the runway with rotors off the hill. It will be just 'normal' Funchal until about 100'

I noticed that several aircraft diverted to Las Palmas rather than Porto Santo, but perhaps its rather small apron was becoming a bit crowded.

RZO160 was the only one that landed this afternoon. All the others were cancelled or diverted. As a pax going into Funchal on a similar day it's the only time I've come really close to a brown trouser moment.

Buck House once asked us to take HMQ in there. There are so many days that you can't make it we couldn't guarantee to get her there. She used her little ship in the end.

Same again today. Lots of holding and some diverting. The obligatory TAF: LPMA 101100Z 1012/1112 01017KT 9999 FEW015 TEMPO 1012/1018 01020G32KT PROB40 TEMPO 1022/1112 01025G37KT
Re: A busy day in the Funchal hold....
I no longer have the limits chart for LPMA but I'm pretty sure the TEMPO wind is outside the airfield limits.

The bad weather has returned to Funchal again, and holding is the order of the day:

...and still it continues. Yesterday was one of diversions, usually back to the mainland. The problem now is that Porto Santo is suffering the same weather, so that's out as a diversion point. The weather pattern in that area seems to be completely stalled at the moment; the QNH seems very low for Madeira in June and presumably reflects the stationary low-pressure area :

Well there will be a ferry ride and you can look at that as a free cruise
Re: A busy day in the Funchal hold....
Indeed, and a ferry from LISBON would be the dog's doo-dahs, wouldn't it?

Re: A busy day in the Funchal hold....
Of course the travel agents do not mention this aspect of getting there. When we were in the business we pointed out all the possible problems of our Amorgos programme and holidays here. A kid in a high street travel agency just has a brochure and points at nice photographs then takes your money. He/She (am I allowed to say that?) has no idea about the destination.
