Won't wear seatbelts..aka Princess Diana Syndrome
One person has died and 30+ others have been injured during severe turbulence on a plane flying from London to Singapore.
Singapore Airlines flight SQ321 from Heathrow was forced to make an emergency landing in Bangkok.
"We can confirm that there are injuries and one fatality on board the Boeing 777-300ER. There were a total of 211 passengers and 18 crew on board," a statement said.
"Singapore Airlines offers its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased."

I have said this before and I will say it again. These people who do not keep their seatbelts fastened are a danger to others. I don't care about them. The fatality may have been cabin crew.

I used to teach the physics of Diana's crash.
It's worth pointing out that people in First Class are at more of a risk, and more of a danger to others, than those in the cheap seats.

More space to move around hence more speed gathered I would guessEx-Ascot wrote: ↑Tue May 21, 2024 1:12 pmWhy Fox?Fox3WheresMyBanana wrote: ↑Tue May 21, 2024 12:30 pmI used to teach the physics of Diana's crash.

I was also wondering - physics or psychology? - and now Rwy says it's just about space!Fox3WheresMyBanana wrote: ↑Tue May 21, 2024 12:30 pmIt's worth pointing out that people in First Class are at more of a risk, and more of a danger to others, than those in the cheap seats.

Accident: Singapore B773 near Bangkok on May 21st 2024, severe turbulence kills one and injures 37

A Singapore Airlines Boeing 777-300, registration 9V-SWM performing flight SQ-321 from London Heathrow,EN (UK) to Singapore (Singapore) with 211 passengers and 18 crew, was enroute at FL370 about 210nm westnorthwest of Bangkok (Thailand) when the aircraft suffered severe turbulence causing injuries to a number of passengers. The crew descended the aircraft to FL310 and decided to divert to Bangkok where the aircraft landed on runway 19R about 30 minutes later. One passenger was pronounced dead upon arrival, 30 passengers and 7 crew were taken to hospitals.
The airline confirmed there had been severe turbulence causing one fatality and injuries on board of flight SQ-321. The airline later reported: "As of 1950hrs Singapore time on 21 May 2024, 18 individuals have been hospitalised. Another 12 are being treated in hospitals."
Authorities in Bangkok reported a British citizen (73) on board died as result of a heart attack. Seven people are in critical conditions. 23 other passengers and 7 crew received injuries of varying degrees.
According to ADS-B data the speed over ground of the aircraft dropped rapidly by about 20 knots prior to starting the (controlled) descent from FL370 to FL310. The data also reveal the aircraft had experienced an altitude deviation of -100/+300 feet about 350nm westnorthwest of Bangkok while enroute at FL370 over Myanmar about 15 minutes earlier.

RIS is correct. More space so more relative speed when the human collides with something else.
Generally, the human maintains speed, and the thing they collide with has slowed down.
This in turn creates more impact deceleration, and so more force, and moment, and pressure, in the collision, which are what actually do the damage.

So, maybe it should be mandatory for everyone to wear their seatbelt all the time (apart from going to the toilet or 1st class bar) What is the problem people seem to have about keeping your seatbelt on?PHXPhlyer wrote: ↑Tue May 21, 2024 3:30 pmAs long as no w@nkers not wearing theirs take you out.Mrs Ex-Ascot wrote: ↑Tue May 21, 2024 3:27 pm^ So as Ex-A keeps on saying, not a problem if you wear your seat belt all the time!!

While deadheading, in uniform, I was seated next to a 20 something punk who made a show of not fastening his seatbelt after the passenger briefing.Mrs Ex-Ascot wrote: ↑Tue May 21, 2024 4:05 pmSo, maybe it should be mandatory for everyone to wear their seatbelt all the time (apart from going to the toilet or 1st class bar) What is the problem people seem to have about keeping your seatbelt on?PHXPhlyer wrote: ↑Tue May 21, 2024 3:30 pmAs long as no w@nkers not wearing theirs take you out.Mrs Ex-Ascot wrote: ↑Tue May 21, 2024 3:27 pm^ So as Ex-A keeps on saying, not a problem if you wear your seat belt all the time!!

I told him to buckle up, adding that I didn't give a s#it about his safety, only mine and others around us.
He still maintained his macho attitude until I told him that I would have no problem having the flight crew notified and have the plane return to the gate to throw his a$$ off.
He sheepishly complied and nothing heard from him for the remainder of the flight.

Re: Won't wear seatbelts..aka Princess Diana Syndrome
Heck, I used to have a lockable 9 point harness and a helmet in the aircraft, and needed them!
As, with my 'agricultural' flying, did my nav.
I'm wondering if some of the injuries were caused by loose articles, rather than simply people hitting bits of the cabin or each other.
Laptops flying about, etc.
My helmet once protected me from an aircrew knife left in the cockpit by my Bulldog instructor when I did dual-to-solo aerobatics.
Not his fault. The knife, in its sheath, came free of his flying suit and fell under his seat cushion, so neither of us noticed the problem when he climbed out. It came free from there halfway through a reverse stall turn on my solo sortie, and smacked into the side of my helmet. Since it was quite a heavy thing with a metal sheath, it was somewhat distracting...although arguably no worse than the smack on the helmet which was a normal part of RAF instructional technique in those days.

Looks pretty grim

The body seems to be visible in one image, covered by a blanket.
Looks like at least one person was thrown up into an overhead bin hatch and fractured it with their head.
One may explain the other.
The fractured hatch looks like it may indeed be in First Class.

Re: Won't wear seatbelts..aka Princess Diana Syndrome
A video tour up the cabin immediately after landing and deplaning, by the looks of it. The crew are still on board.
May be the blanket-covered body right at the end of the video.
https://x.com/PBoro1118/status/1792945372244898036
Some evidence of blood on the overhead bins.
the forward section of the cabin isn't entered, and it would appear this is the section with the fractured bin, since the other sections don't match that other bit of video.
Unconfirmed reports that the death (British pax) was by heart attack, and there are seven pax in critical condition. Also 23 pax 1 crew member moderately injured.
I would guess they are mostly cerebral/spinal injuries from hitting the cabin ceiling/overhead bins, or maybe also other heart attacks.
Other reports say 53 injured and 7 of the 18 crew taken to hospital. Also the dead pax may be a 73 year old who had a known heart condition.
It will probably take a while to get accurate reports.

Identity of fatality revealed in the Daily Torygraph. Confirmed that he had a heart condition. Further details indicate many injuries were from a sudden drop in aircraft altitude causing unsecured passengers to impact the ceiling of the cabin.

Allegedly serving breakfast at the time, which usually stimulates a lot of people to go to the toilet so could be queueing. Someone did impact the ceiling in one of the toilets.

Of course I always keep my belt fastened when in my seat, but ..... I also have a Colostomy bag, and carry an official looking note provided by a USA Colostomy group to inform the Cabin Crew that regardless of any seat belt requirement I may have to go to the toilet NOW, or would they rather they cleaned up any resultant mess around my seat ? !!
Never been a problem so far ( never say never ) but despite careful monitoring before and during flight at convenient times, one never knows.
