May 29, Oak Apple Day, the observance of the Happy Restoration of His Majesty King Charles II:
In 1660, Parliament declared 29 May a public holiday, "to be for ever kept as a day of thanksgiving for our redemption from tyranny and the King's return to his Government, he entering London that day."

Today is Kick Slasher In The Financial Nuts Day.
Oil Futures - wrong.
Betting short term against the USD - wrong.
S&P fcuking 500 - wrong.
1 month T-Bill - wrong.
Thinking I'd get a big new bed for 20% off - wrong.
I should know better than to screw around with money during my period.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of International Literacy Day and UNESCO is celebrating it under the banner “Reading the Past, Writing the Future”.
Somewhat... well, how should I put it. Ironic? considering how many people can't write and how many use the skill for 'pointless drivel' (I believe is the classification around here? )

I once heard some trendy Lefty Academic say much the same back in the mid 80's when there was a bit of a debate going on regarding the then appalling lack of correct spelling and grammar being taught in some State Schools.
From what I gather, little has changed.

From 'Rhinos Without Borders':
'September 22nd is World Rhino Day and to celebrate this iconic species on this special day we want to send you an update on the Rhinos Without Borders project.
The most exciting news is that we have started to see the results of rhinos being moved into a stress-free world with water and grazing and the full protection of the Botswana government, they have started to produce calves. Our imports have produced 3 new calves this last two months (making it 5 so far)'
If I could post photos on this gadget I took a photo of one with mother on my 60th last year.

How to celebrate World Porridge Day
First, start your day off with a big bowl of porridge to make sure you get the best beginning you can hope for. Then start considering how you can make a morning like that a reality for people everywhere.
I have to confess it was one of the rare days we did not have porridge. Somehow. Let's say it was saving it for those in need?
(P.S my personal favorite is buckwheat - the one I used to totally hate as a kid)

Used to scoff it down daily as a sprog during WWII, and just after, but on sampling the lumpy stuff the RAF called porridge put me off for ever.

Re: What's the day today?
In my first year (1967) at Boarding School in Adelaide SA, the breakfast served in the Winter months was porridge.
The very first morning it appeared, I took one look at it and announced to the rest of the table that I didn't want it, did anyone else? The person sitting next to me promptly grabbed it and added it to his own.
He continued to do so, even after the subsequent discovery of weevils in someone's serve later that Winter!
This event actually made a skit in the Winter term's Boarders Concert. "....Weevils Porridge. More meat in every spoon....!" This did not amuse 'Matron' (The Head of the Kitchen Staff) although we later heard rumours of the Staff roaring with laughter amongst themselves, when out of Matron's hearing)
Oddly enough, that was the last year that this School ever served that meal in Winter, or any other time!

Got to eat Millet porridge in northern Africa. Still find it quite yummy, but I suspect it's an acquired taste, can be quite strong.
