An old bridge, probably older than railways, 1825, so over a river somewhere!

Re: The Smokin' Hot Where On Earth Thread Mk III
Well spotted om15 - it is the auld Brig o' Doon, near Alloway.
Tam, after bousing too late at the nappy, rides home astride his grey mare Meg (a better never lifted leg), and disturbs the devil, warlocks and witches having a rave at auld Alloway KIrk. Closely followed by Nannie just wearing her cutty sark, approaching the brig they are saved, because the witch can't cross the water.
And flew at Tam wi' furious ettle;
But little wist she Maggie's mettle -
Ae spring brought off her master hale,
But left behind her ain gray tail;
The carlin claught her by the rump,
And left poor Maggie scarce a stump.
No, wha this tale o' truth shall read,
Ilk man and mother's son take heed;
Whene'er to drink you are inclin'd,
Or cutty-sarks run in your mind,
Think! ye may buy joys o'er dear -
Remember Tam o' Shanter's mare.

Ian - it's believed to have been built in the 15th Century, over the River Doon.

Re: The Smokin' Hot Where On Earth Thread Mk III
There was a program about the UK railways on the History Channel.
It started, in the words used, 'in the beginning, in 1830 with the Liverpool to Manchester Railway'.
Seems they didn't know about Stockton to Darlington in 1825!

Stockton to Darlington, Rocket, Stevenson are some of the few historical things I remember from primary school. I annoy my wife by criticising historical documentaries - especially about stock footage of past events, which are clearly wrong aircraft/ships etc . She tells me it won't matter in a few years as it will have faded and been lost from people's memories, to become historical 'fact'. Was it Mark Twain (!) who said a lie will travel the World before the truth has got its boots on?

A lot of people incorrectly believe that the Rocket was used to open the Stockton to Darlington Railway. It wasn't.FD2 wrote: ↑Wed Nov 06, 2019 10:24 pmStockton to Darlington, Rocket, Stevenson are some of the few historical things I remember from primary school. That loco was 'Locomotion Number 1'. It was parked on the platform at Darlington for many years. It has now been moved, I believe to the new museum in York, maybe the Transport Museum in London. Two of the original carriages were at Stockton. Dunno if they still are. There was also a section of the original track, that could be seen leaving Darlington, while travelling on the line to Middlesbrough, Redcar & Saltburn.
The Rocket was the loco that won the competition to be used on the Liverpool to Manchester line.

Thanks Ian - here it is. It's your round om15, for knowing it was Burns related, though the 'timorous beastie' was far away in a field somewhere.

Re: The Smokin' Hot Where On Earth Thread Mk III
Are we in the same part of the country? Is that Thornaby?
Re: The Smokin' Hot Where On Earth Thread Mk III
Not there Capes, we haven't visited this area for a while, it will be quite cold there today I think.
(Just checked, it is minus 12 degrees C today)

Re: The Smokin' Hot Where On Earth Thread Mk III
The bridge that we are viewing through the girders is a new bridge erected on the site of an existing bridge, both bridges called the same name after the man who originally operated a ferry across this river.

Charon or Kharon (/ˈkɛərɒn, -ən/; Greek Χάρων) is the ferryman of Hades
I didn't know that there was now a bridge
