Plant Pages (alphabetical)
Plant Pages (alphabetical)
Having noticed there are quite a few germinators and propagators around here, I venture to start the passion of mine again - even though I was quite lonely with the Flower Alphabet in TOP in the final pages ?
So, plants in the alphabetical order - not necessarily with flowers, just what you think they are interesting for. Fruit, seeds, shape, whatever. Common names, cultivar names, Latin names, whatever.
An A - Z for a start :
Azalea, a native one:

P.S the Flower Alphabet in TOP still gets about 100 views a day. Still puzzles me.

B is for Borage, grows anywhere, comes on it's own, can be used in salads and livens up borders.
None in my present garden, but it used to shoot up everywhere in my last garden, just nice to have around in a cottage garden

grows anywhere and everywhere - even if you don't want it to!
Poor performance in a vaze, though.
But they're pretty for sure!
My everlasting love - the Campanula bunch, bellflowers:

Digitalis
The fox glove, generally grow a few from seed each year, over the years have self seeded and now every year all the shady areas in the garden and behind the shrubs have foxgloves growing, look good in drab areas and attract bees, cheap and cheerful way to have colour and give a cottage garden effect.

They're surely fascinating!
Earth Tongue - an intriguing name and equally intriguing look and Family: Geoglossaceae could break anyone's tongue, I guess?

Drought does not go well with most plants - good to know there still are some who don't mind too much!

Iceberg Lettuce
my dear old auntie nell used to make a salad dish by taking an iceberg lettuce, cutting the stem out,
then slicing the entire thing in about 5mm slices, pour over a goodly amount of mayonnaise and tossing it to mix.
it was lovely.
she made it back in the days of imperial measurements so the slices were about a quarter of an inch thick.
if yours doesn't come up to expectations then the metric slicing may be the culprit....
still miles better than any rocket based salad dish.

Love Iceberg Lettuce, as long as it is in Chunks, not cut little pieces.
I like to get my teeth into it !

Re: Plant Pages (alphabetical)
Guys, you've got it all wrong!
One has to have something zero-fat for the dressing - like lemon juice with honey, or...
(Well, but it does taste good your way, too )
And, Cape, I thought hydrangeas that are blue have been watered with ink or something?
So, having confessed my ignorance, I'd like to move on to J, which is for
Jacaranda - another one I didn't know about (and was informed in the Flower Alphabet in TOP) - just terrific and extraterrestial, I'd say!
http://www.waterwereld.nu/jacaranda.php
and wood looks impressive, too
http://www.rotsenfurniture.com/products/jacaranda-coffee-table
(even though I thought it's a bench or something)

J
just so that you know hydrangea colour is determined by the pH of the soil.
alkaline soil gets you pink
acidic soil gets you blue.

Re: Plant Pages (alphabetical)
yeah, but I thought natural soils aren't that acidic?
Anyway, to K
which will be Kimjongilia (and I'm not kidding)

To commemorate Kim Jong-il's 46th birthday in 1988, Japanese botanist Kamo Mototeru cultivated a new perennial begonia named "kimjongilia" (literally, "flower of Kim Jong-il"), representing the Juche revolutionary cause of the Dear Leader. It was presented as a "token of friendship between Korea and Japan".The flower symbolizes wisdom, love, justice and peace. It is designed to bloom every year on Kim Jong-il's birthday, February 16. Moving onto k, one of my favourite 'bush foods' is called
Kakadu Plum
After collecting it for years with the Aboriginals, I found a company that makes sauces out of bush foods
And one of them is kakadu plum.
Best link I could find.
http://www.kakaduplum.com.au
And yes, it is the same kakadu that is kaadu national park, northern territory.

Re: Plant Pages (alphabetical)
Probes-back to the hydrangea thing. The soil here is very acidic-all our hydrangeas come out blue. You can change the colour quite easily. If you plant them in pots with bagged potting soil, they will be pink. Some say if you put a copper coin in the soil it will do the same thing-never tried it, so may be an old wives tale!
