Accident: Key Lime SW4 and private aircraft at Denver on May 12th 2021, midair collision

A Key Lime Air Swearingen SA-226 Metro II, registration N280KL performing flight KG-970 from Salida,CO to Denver Centennial,CO (USA), was on a visual approach to Centennial's runway 17L cleared for the approach and was descending through 6400 feet about 3nm north of the threshold runway 17L.
A private Cirrus SR-22, registration N416DJ, was also on approach to Denver Centennial descending through 6400 feet about 3nm north of the threshold of runway 17R.
The two aircraft collided, the Cirrus apparently struck across through the fuselage of the Metroliner just above the wings taking out the whole cabin section at that point. The crew declared emergency on tower frequency reporting their right hand engine had failed and reported they saw another aircraft on parachute going down. After landing the crew advised, it had definitely been a mid air collision.
The Cirrus pilot activated their parachute and landed in a field nearby with no injuries. The crew of the Metroliner managed to land the aircraft at Cenntennial Airport.
The Cirrus ended up about 2.7nm north of runway 17L in the area of the Cherry Creek Reservoir. The local Sheriffs Office gave the location between E. Bellevue Ave and S. Cherry Creek Drive.

One of the planes crashed, according to fire officials.
(CNN)There are no injuries after a midair collision involving two small planes outside of Denver, according to the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office.
"Two on board walked away with no injuries. Second plane able to land safe no injuries," the sheriff's office said in a tweet.
Initial reports are that the two planes collided in midair, according to a tweet from South Metro Fire Rescue in the Colorado city of Centennial.
While one plane involved crashed, the second plane was able to land at Centennial Airport, according to the tweet.
A tweet from the National Transportation Safety Board said the incident happened as the planes were landing. It said one aircraft was a Metroliner and the other was a Cirrus.

I guess that the occupants of the Cirrus were glad that they had the safety option of the parachute - though it doesn't look to be that damaged.
Re: Someone needs to buy a lottery ticket!
It's amazing the tail stayed on! Fortunate there was no-one in the back.

There must have been a lot of drag from that damage and he was on a single donk.
Don't quite understand who was at fault there.

Re: Someone needs to buy a lottery ticket!
Yes, clearly an aircraft that can take a licking and keep on ticking!
The Cirrus pilot clearly had the Cessna in sight and mistook that for the Metroliner.
The FAA and this airport might want to rethink this procedure.

Re: Someone needs to buy a lottery ticket!
The Metro liner was focused on looking for the Cessna and the Cirrus blindsided them..
To be sung to the tune of, "there were three in the bed and the little one said, roll over..."
What was the controller doing as the Cirrus was clearly going to fly straight through the centre line of 17 Right? Should have asked him earlier to extend downwind.
Wind was calm... but I am still going to look for the METAR...
See all wrapped up in two posts. Can I join the "big boys" on TOP now?
Seriously though, if the story about the student pilot checks out then he deserves the GreenGoblin Sang Froid Gong (no wrong gone Mong Gong, I can assure you) for the way he handled the whole thing.

Re: Someone needs to buy a lottery ticket!
There is a gulf in the procedure for VFR traffic world-wide. I agree that ATC bear a large part of the responsibility for this. What was the controller doing as the Cirrus was clearly going to fly straight through the centre line of 17 Right? Should have asked him earlier to extend downwind.
